SUMMARY:

The  Director, Major Gifts & Strategic Initiatives provides leadership in the ongoing cultivation and stewardship of major donors and builds support for the long-term sustainability of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and implement comprehensive strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift donors and prospects.

• Establish and maintain a donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure new major donors are developed and have opportunities to increase their level of support on an annual basis.

• Manage a prospect strategy that includes identifying and researching prospects, working closely with volunteer leadership, Board members, Senior Management and the Development team to coordinate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies with assigned prospects.

• Support the volunteer leadership (primarily the Foundation and Society Boards) and senior management in developing major gift strategies.

• As a senior leader in the organization, play a leading role in the development and implementation of key strategic initiatives.

• Lead the development of both long and short term operational plans to strengthen and grow the major gifts program.

• Maintain thorough, timely and accurate records including giving histories, profiles, interactions, etc.

• Develop proposals for major gift solicitations.

• Meet annual fundraising goals and monitor annual funding forecasts for Major Gift revenue targets.

• Ensure appropriate donor recognition, acknowledgement and stewardship programs are in place for major gift donors.

• Provides activity and revenue reports as required.

• Working closely with the Communications team members, ensure stewardship reports and other communications required to cultivate and solicit major gift donors are coordinated.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• University degree or equivalent background plus 5-7 years recent fundraising experience

• Proven success in the solicitation of $50,000+ gifts from individuals

• Proven success in guiding, training and supporting volunteers in ‘making the ask’

• Knowledge and understanding of sophisticated fundraising practices

• Demonstrated history of relationship building with Board members and other leadership volunteers, staff, prospects and donors

• Proven success in strategic thinking

• Ability to work effectively in a highly collegial environment

• Excellent project management, teamwork, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills

• Experience in managing capital campaigns is a definite asset

• Sound judgment, maturity, diplomacy, initiative and problem solving abilities

• Ability to think strategically and develop clearly written plans and objectives for achieving major gift targets

• Must be able to work under pressure of deadlines and dollar goals

• Proficient in MS Office;  Experience with Raiser’s Edge an asset
