Canuck Place supports learning through student placements and clinical teaching
In keeping with our mission, vision and values, we believe:
• in the promotion of pediatric palliative care as a specialty area of practice;
• that Canuck Place staff can make significant contributions to student learning;
• in the development of professional staff in pediatric palliative care; and
• in the value of providing learning experience to students
Student Placements
As Canuck Place is a small facility, the number of student/trainee placements is determined based on the impact on children, families and staff. All students/trainees must have an appropriate supervisor/ preceptor on staff at Canuck Place.
If you are interested in applying for a placement, you are encouraged to do so early as not all requests can be met.
Clinical placements/rotations are available in the following disciplines:
- Nursing -> Final year undergraduate level, post-RN, graduate
- Medicine -> senior residents and fellows
- Social Work -> graduate level
- Recreation Therapy
- Chaplaincy
- Music Therapy
- Clinical Counseling
Learning opportunities may also be available for students in non-clinical disciplines, such as Management / Administration, Fundraising / Development
Other learning opportunities
Special projects may be considered on an individual basis.
For students in health care disciplines and health care professionals interested in learning more about Canuck Place and pediatric palliative care there are monthly clinical visitor sessions.
These are generally held the first Friday of every month, from 1300 – 1400. There is a maximum of 10 participants per session.
